The Secret Life of Plants
Named first for the Stevie Wonder album and, subsequently, the film for which the album was originally made, The Secret Life of Plants is Lindiwe's burlesque identity. Trained as an ecdysiast with Brown Girls Burlesque's Broad Squad in 2013, The Secret has performed in New York City and Johannesburg. Her eponymous graduation piece went on to be developed into performances for two people at a time inside the old safe at Ithuba Gallery while on residency in 2014.
An experiment in intimate performance, the site specific piece consisted of a minimalistic garden backdrop against which the glittering solo performance took place. The audience limit created a collusion between the three bodies in the room, all of whom could be seen by the other, separated only by a line of soil. For three a half minutes - the length of the soundtrack plus the time it took for the needle to drop onto or lift off of the record from which it played - we were enclosed together in a literal safe space.
